Rosettes

Description

The cushion displays a colourful composition of three rosettes of the 12th century that are taken from the Basilica of St. Mark in Venice. The two top ones are elaborate ornamentations composed by coloured glass paste and enamelled glass laid out on a gold ground, situated in the porch of the cathedral. The third bottom one is a marble mosaic motif taken from the pavement. The cushion has a plain silk back and a hidden zipper on the top.

The fabric

This unique raw silk fabric was especially found for this and a few other designs to lend an earthy and precious feel because of its nubbly natural texture. The raw yarn’s natural coloring ranges from light beige to bright yellow. The raw yarn is not bleached to maintain its strength. The more refined the silk and the smaller the yarn, the more it resembles the look and feel we as silky. The raw Thai silk is often expertly naturally dyed by hand, and spun into a fine yarn for weaving. The fabric has irregular surface with rough and nubbly appearance. The nubbly texture of the silk comes from the use of very short fibers (called “silk noil”) to weave the fabric. Silk fiber in its raw state is for its size the strongest textile fiber in existence.
